Re: Headset replacement for Pino - any surprises?

Answering my own question for the benefit of other readers. The Pino 2 Steel has: [*]a head tube inside diameter of 44mm [*]a 1" threaded headset with some of the toughest looking bearings I've ever seen [*]aluminum integrated headset cups pressed in, with what looks like Red Loctite but is pro...

Re: Schaftdurchmesser Gabel Pino 2 Steel?

Did you find the answer? I'm also wondering if the Pino 2 Steel has a 1" or 1-1/8" threaded fork steer tube diameter.

Haben Sie die Antwort finden? Ich bin auch gefragt, wenn der Pino 2 Stahl hat eine 1 "oder 1-1/8" Gewindegabel Lenkrohrdurchmesser.

Headset replacement for Pino - any surprises?

Well, it's been 3 years and the Pino has been good to us. Aside from the rear wheel, everything has held up well. And my replacement rear wheel (Shimano XT 756 hub to MTB DH rim) is still true! However, the headset looks like it might be crushed - it started developing some play a few rides back, an...

Largest rear brake for Pino-2?

Hi all, I've read through the discussion of brake upgrades here, but haven't found a clear answer about rear brake upgrade possibilities. I've got the 180mm rear rotor and am trying to upgrade to something with better heat dissipation. From measuring the gap between rotor and frame, it looks like th...

Cheap kickstand = crushed chainstays

The price of the double-kickstand seemed way too much at first, but in hindsight it might have been the better deal. After a year and a half, and three loaded weekend tours, it looks like our steel Pino has frame damage. The simple rear kickstand looked sturdy enough, in fact it's still in great con...

Re: New rear wheel: advice & offset?

Just had the dropouts bent out to 135mm - much better.

Unfortunately I don't have a very good photo of the wheel yet - here's some poor quality shots for now. The rim is almost as thick as the tire!

Re: New rear wheel: advice & offset?

OK, built the wheel and installed it with no problems. It looks pretty solid (or skookum as a west coaster would say). Only question: Why the hell is the rear dropout spacing on the Pino 132.5mm. Do they really think someone is going to install a 130mm rear hub on a tandem? As it is it just ma...

Re: New rear wheel: advice & offset?

Pieter, Thanks for the reply, that's great to hear. I will follow in your footsteps - as long as the XT 756's freewheel can take the chain torque, the bearings can take the weight, and the flanges can take high spoke tension, then the rim I'm thinking of using should be a no brainer: http://www.atom...

New rear wheel: advice & offset?

Well after 2000km the cheap "Hase" rear hub is toast - the freewheel pawls have bent and the hub no longer coasts. Plus the axle is bent. Warranty support after one year is probably difficult/nonexistent, so I guess it's time to build a new wheel. I'm thinking of using a mountain bike down...

Re: Fork : grind 1 vs white brother

The Grind is a crappy fork, sans doute. But the White Bros. fork is Air/Oil, and I would be concerned about durability, especially if you'll be touring long distances. There is another 20" fork that was tested by the globecyclers, made by MEKS, I think it had some crown/frame interference probl...

Extra long stoker boom?

When buying a 2007 model steel Pino last year, I decided not to order the extra-long +10cm stoker boom. Oops. Being 196cm I should have known better. Any advice on how to get more stoker boom extension, as cheaply as possible?

It might be worth waiting for the 50mm travel MEKS / SASO Carbon AC to be tested by the Globecyclers. For a 250kg bicycle, coil spring+oil seems to me the only reliable technology.

Here's my bike computer setup, using an old bell mounting bracket and some zip ties.

My only advice is to wrap the bike computer wire around the plastic chain guard to keep it out of the way.

Here it is - very red! :D The bike dealer found a few oddball rack parts to make up a twin-stand-replacement, and I rigged a bike computer mount out of an old bicycle bell and some zip-ties. Finally, I rigged a mud-flap on the lowrider rack, making one out of glued inner-tube strips. Thanks for putt...
